Siva Poomi Elders Home, Jaffna (50 elders)

Sri Lankan population is about 20 million to date and it is ageing day by day. It is estimated that by year 2020, one in four will have reached the age of sixty. Moreover, number of reasons has awakened the need of Homes for the Elders; More than 52% of Sri Lankan population is below the poverty line. Younger generation/ the work force of the country who should be looking after their elderly parents; have either moved to main cities or abroad leaving behind their elderly parents, in search of healthier employment opportunities, due to the conditions in the country or looking for better prospects of life. Also there are elderly people who neither have children or anybody else to look after them nor can look after themselves on their own.

If we have to make it more comprehensive Elders basically are another category of special children thus extended arm of Sivapoomi home was established in 2006 in Sulipuram, Tholpuram, Jaffna and it accommodates 58 inmates at present. They are at varying level of physical and mental ability necessitating provision of more than just basic facilities such as shelter, food, clothing and medical care. That is where Sivapoomi differentiates itself by offering regular doctor visits, in-house nursing facility for bed ridden elders and facilitate the search of love, peace and spirituality through making available a library, daily prayers and soft hearted, service oriented maids. The touch of love is all what matters for an elderly and people to converse, an environment to feel the presence of peace and may be god where feeling of safety is also incorporated therein would be heaven being felt on earth. Heart and face filled with happiness of all our elderly is what we boast as our achievement and thanks to all our Donors, MNT is committed to take it further infinitely.
