Upgrading of the boys hostel at hind college Ratmalana

The Manitha Neyam or Love for Humanity Trust was founded in 1999 to offer charitable, social and educational services to the needy and the disabled. Our care and support has been extended throughout Sri Lanka with special emphasis on the war torn areas of the north and east of the country.  With the onset of the tsunami in 2004, our efforts were channeled to provide immediate relief by way of food and utility items, school uniforms and bicycles to the affected families.

We also embarked on long term livelihood support projects by providing sewing machines, fishing boats and motors, and funds for other income generation projects. Up to now, we have generated approximately US$400,000/- in funds which have been managed and distributed by the Trust for tsunami relief alone.

Since its inception, the trust has been providing funding for the maintenance of several humanitarian projects. These include a hostel for needy children and a vocational training centre in Mannar, In Killinochchi, a home for elders, an orphanage, and a school for the rehabilitation of the disabled.

A home for the deaf and blind in Mullaithivu, A boys home in Batticaloa. A hostel for girls…and a home for orphans & elders in Ratmalana. As part of our long term commitment, The Manitha Neyam Trust, funds and maintains a hostel for boys at the Hindu College in Ratmalana. This hostel accommodates 120 students many of whom are orphans. Most of these children are from the Vanni district and have been affected by the civil strife in that area.

The funding by the Trust provides these needy children with meals as well as medical and educational material. The Trust lays special emphasis on the acadamic needs of these students, with priority given for university admission. To facilitate this, we even offer special services with paid teachers to provide additional tutorial help after school hours. We also offer vocational training facilities to students, unable to gain admission to universities.

The intention of the trust is the creation of an environment which is conducive to these children’s needs.

In order to achieve this objective, our most urgent requirement of the moment is the provision of proper toilet and sanitation facilities. The existing facilities are non functional, since the septic tank has collapsed. Therefore, an urgent upgrade is most essential as this problem causes immense hardship to the students.

The proposed project will be the construction of a new toilet block which will be built on this land. It will consist of 6 toilets, a septic tank and a soakage pit. The entire project will be completed in four months and all stages of the construction will be closely supervised and monitored by the trustees. The total cost of the project has been estimated at Rs.817,375/- or US$8,100/-.

Once the project is underway, project updates and student updates will be provided by the trust through regular posts on our website.

Creating an environment in which these students can thrive and excel is of utmost importance. The construction of these toilets will greatly improve the living standards at the hostel, giving these children a sense of pride and belonging to the only place most of them call home.
