Income Generation Project for the
victims of the village Kallaru in Killinochchi
The Government Agent, Killinochchi
informed us that with the approval of the Government he has allotted
land to 224 families in Kallaru in Kandavalai which is a remote village
bordering Mullaitivu district and was badly damaged in the recent
catastrophe. The lands allotted are 2 Km to 3 Km away from the beach.
We give below a brief report in regard to this project:-
Introduction
Manitha Neyam Trust is happy to submit
to our donors a progress report on Kallaru Project. We would like to
take this opportunity to thank the donors once again for their kind
support and generosity in making this project a reality.
2.
Project
As you are aware, the purpose of this
project is to provide 75 boats, complete with motor and fishing nets, to
the fisher folk who were displaced by the Tsunami from their homes in
Kallaru in the Killinochchi district.
3.
Funding
We have to date received a total sum of
over Rs.18 million from various donors. Our major partner is American
Jewish World Services (AJWS) and they made their first installment
contribution.
These funds
have been utilized -
a.
to purchase 20 units of boats, motors and nets; and
b.
an advance payment for a further 30 units of boats, motors and nets.
4.
Progress to date
The 20 units have already been
distributed to selected beneficiaries in
August 2005
We hope to be able to deliver the 30
boats that are on order to a further group of identified beneficiaries
by mid January 2000.
5. Follow
through
We anticipate using the balance
contribution from AJWS to purchase another 25 units to complete this
phase of our project (a total of 75 units) which we hope would generate
income for these victims to enable them to be self sufficient.
We will closely monitor the need and requirement before committing
delivery of the last 25 units.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, we
thank our donors once again.
