The  people  of  the
 North  East  have
 experienced more
than their share
of hardship and
heartache over the
 last two decades
 or more.
 An uneasy peace
and a shaky truce
 seemed to indicate
 that the worst
was over.  Then
 came
26th December 2004.

And then come the Tsunami.....

The destruction that the Tsunami brought, further added to the misery of the people of the North East, particularly in the areas of Killinochchi and Mullaitivu. Manitha Neyam Was quick to visit the scenes of destruction and provide assistance in carious forms and fashion. More remains to be done.

In the disrict of Mullaitiuv alone an estimated 3300 lost their lives, eight villages were totally devastated, public buildings, homes and schools were destroyed and thousands still unaccounted for. A story repeated in Kilinochchi, in the Jaffna district and in Batticaloa.

In the district of Mullaitivu alone an estimated 3300 lost their lives, eight villages were totally devastated, public buildings, homes and schools were destroyed and thousands still unaccounted for.  A story repeated in Kilinochchi, in the Jaffna district and in Batticaloa.  Four areas visited by Manitha Neyam in the last month.  The following attempts to give you a firsthand account of the suffering of the people of the North East.  Some are heartrending.  Some are tragic.  Most view their situation as hopeless.

On their visits to these areas Manitha Neyam distributed more than 1000 bicycles, footwear, material for school uniforms and exercise books.  Much more remains to be done - the issues of livelihood and vocation being the most urgent followed by housing and education.  Then there is also the need to heal the mental scars in people who are just recovering from a civil war and who now fear the wrath of the sea....
