Jaffna district - Mamunai, Chempiyan Pattu, Thalayadi & Maruthankerny in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka

[11.08.2006]
We have initiated efforts to procure 30 motorboats & fishing nets for 30 of the affected families at Mamunai at an estimated total cost of US $ 108,000. These boats were handed over to the beneficiaries in mid August 2005. A computer lab is now under construction.

[01.01.2006]
We visited the affected areas in the Jaffna district from January 23 to January 26. The devastation caused by the Tsunami Tidal waves was very heavy.

The Villages of Mamunai, Chempian Pattu, Thalayady and Maruthankerny were very badly damaged and all the houses within 2 to 3 Kilometers from the beach were completely destroyed with several persons being killed. Some are missing and presumed to be dead.

We also visited Point Pedro, Valvaettiturai and Poikandy distributed School exercise books and Kitchen utensils to 250 families.

We met the Mr. Ganesh the Government Agent, Jaffna and he requested us to provide 1,000 bicycles and 3,000 sets of Kitchen Utensils to the families affected by Tsunami. These items are now in short supply and it may take a few weeks to obtain them.
